

Jean V. Bates, 90, of the Providence Care Center in Beaver Falls, formerly of West Mayfield, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Born June 14, 1922 in Koppel, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Frances Schomaker Plake. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Patterson Township and was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City. She had been employed at the former Babcock & Wilcox Tubular Products Company in the accounting department, a former Girl Scout leader, a member of the Koppel Elementary School Board, secretary of the Koppel School Board, and had been instrumental in the construction of the new Koppel Elementary School while a member of the board. She and her late husband Robert were members of the Survivors of the Bataan and Corregidor Death March organization.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert K. Bates in 1982, and three sisters, Elizabeth Plake, Marie Plake, and Wilhemina Walton.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Joyce Bates, Beaver Falls, a grandson and his wife, Eric and Jordan Bates, Darlington, a granddaughter and her husband, Allison and Lane Justice, Ellwood City, three great-grandsons, Kenny and Nickolas Bates, Evan Justice, and a sister Sylvia Reeher, Koppel.
Friends will be received Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home, www.hillandkunselman.com., 3801-4th Ave., College Hill, Beaver Falls. There will be an additional viewing on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service 11 a.m. Her pastor, the Rev. Paul D. Poole will be officiating.
Private interment in Clinton Cemetery, Wampum.
