George William Brown, 81, Chippewa, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012, at Hospice of the Valley, in Boardman, Ohio.
Mr. Brown was born September 15, 1930, in Williamson, W.VA., the son of the late William MacDonald Brown and wife Elva Brown, nee Gannon.
He was the husband of Eleanor Murphy Brown. They were married April 18, 1959, in Midland, PA.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife Eleanor, Chippewa; two sons, James Brown and wife Paula, Canfield, OH and Donald Brown and wife Sandra, Hopkinton, MA; three daughters, Judith Brown and husband Robert Davis, Lakeside, MI, Karen Lotrecchiano, Newtown, CT, Susan Bowles and husband Gary, Norristown, PA; 10 grandchildren, AllisonEngstrom, Rachel and Sarah Brown of Canfield, Alexandra, Elizabeth and Austin Brown of Hopkinton, Katherine and Nicholas Lotrecchiano of Newtown, and Gannon and Mairin Bowles of Norristown; a brother, MacDonald Brown, and wife Rose Mary of Redmond, WA; other relatives and countless friends.He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maryanne Brammlet.
Mr. Brown received a Bachelors of Science in Commerce from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN in 1952 and worked for Travelers Insurance in his early career before establishing George Brown Insurance Agency, Inc. in Chippewa from 1968-1991. In 1992, Mr. Brown became a Handel’s Ice Cream franchise owner in partnership with his son James; their store is in West Mifflin, PA.
Mr. Brown was highly involved in the local community and church. He served on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army and was a long-standing member of the Beaver Falls Chamber of Commerce, The Rotary Club, and Sierra Club, of which he served on many committees.He was a lectorand Catechism teacherat Christ the Divine Teacher for many years.
Mr. Brown enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren,travelling to their summer home in New York, and meeting new people – he never knew a stranger.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 29, from 2- 4 and 6- 8 p.m. at Hill-Kunselman Funeral Home, 3801 4Th Avenue, Beaver Falls. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at Christ the Divine Teacher Church, Chippewa, with Father Kim Shrek celebrating the mass. A luncheon to follow immediately, in the church Social Hall.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown OH, 44512.
