Muriel J. “Phillips” McCarl, 89, of Chippewa Township, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 in Heritage Valley Beaver.
Born Feb. 21, 1923 in Beaver Falls, she was the daughter of the late James Arlington Phillips and Cora Price Phillips. She was a graduate of Beaver Falls High School, Class of 1941, and the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music, Class of 1945. She had been a very active member of the community and the Chippewa United Methodist Church where she served the Lord as the music director for 30 years, director of the youth and the adult bell choirs, and also director of the youth and adult choirs. She and her late husband Foster McCarl, Jr., were avid collectors of quilts and coverlets, and were supporters of the McCarl Coverlet Gallery of the Fred Rogers Center at St. Vincent College and the McCarl Folk Art Gallery at the Abbey Aldrich Rockefeller Museum at Colonial Williamsburg. She was a former music teacher in the Beaver Falls School District. She had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Wenonah Chapter No., 124. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Foster McCarl, Jr. on Jan. 24, 2007, a brother John “Johnny” Phillips, and a great-grandson Carter James Brown. She is survived by four sons and four daughters-in-law, F. James and Carol McCarl, Bluffton, SC, Brian B. and Kristin McCarl, College Hill, Kevin A. and Tammy McCarl, Pittsburgh, Shawn P. and Kimberly McCarl, Hollidaysburg, PA, twelve grandchildren, Erin Morgan, Foster Jeffrey McCarl, Megan Brown, Maura McCarl, Melissa McCarl, Jaclyn Mack, Michael McCarl, Jessica McCarl, Stephanie McCarl, Christopher McCarl, Janelle McCarl, Bethany McCarl, seven great-grandchildren, Alyssa Morgan, Hunter Morgan, Emma McCarl, Andrew Brown, Acen Brown, Avery Brown, Madyson Mack, and a beloved niece and her husband, Muriel Rae and Dan Havel, Cleveland, OH. Friends will be received Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m. in the Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home, www.hillandkunselman.com., 3801-4th Ave., (Rt. 18) College Hill, Beaver Falls. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Chippewa United Methodist Church, 2545 Darlington Road, Chippewa Twp., with Dr. Daniel Stinson officiating. Private interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Cemetery, Daugherty Twp.
