Walter "The Chief' Verosky Jr., 85, of Chippewa Township, formerly of Freedom, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in his home.
Born April 6, 1921, in Braddock, he was a son of the late Walter Sr. and Mary Ann Littel Verosky. He was a member of Christ the Divine Teacher Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Polish Falcons in Donora, and was active in the Chippewa Indians Midget Football program as their mascot "The Chief," when his grandson, Billy, played. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day and was a radioman on an LST. Before he enlisted in the Navy, he had been in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a welder and had been employed at the former U.S. Steel Plant in Donora, Bethlehem Steel and at Dravo on Neville Island.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Matasick Verosky, on April 26, 1997, and a sister, Ann Kuzzepa.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Dreyer, Chippewa Township, and her fianc, Louis "Butch" Young; a son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Judy Verosky, Chippewa Township; grandchildren, Todd and Mary Beth Dreyer, Pittsburgh; Shannon and Sam Huston, Enon Valley; William Verosky and Katey Glass; four great-grandchildren, Kevin, Josh, Brandt and Alyssa; a brother, Nicholas Verosky, in Connecticut, and a sister, Cil Blangger, Levittown, Pa.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the HILL & KUNSELMAN FUNERAL HOME, www.hillandkunselman.com, 3801 Fourth Ave., College Hill, Beaver Falls, where prayers will be recited on Wednesday at 9:20 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Church with his pastor, the Rev. Father Robert Franco as celebrant.
Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, New Sewickley Township.
The Beaver County Special Unit will conduct full military rites at the cemetery on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m.
