Edward Bernstein, 94, of Brighton Township, died Thursday, June 20, 2019 in Brighton Rehab and Wellness Center.

Born October 3, 1924 in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joseph I. and Kathleen Louise Byrne Bernstein.  He was a veteran of World War II have served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a waist gunner and radio operator.  He served his country a second time with two tours of duty in Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a radio operator and radio repairman. Upon his return to the states he joined the Air National Guard until his retirement.  He was a charter member of the Vietnam Veterans of America - Chapter 862, Southwestern Pennsylvania, and a Life Member of the Rochester VFW.  He was a member of Chippewa United Methodist Church and had retired from Republic Steel Corporation.  He was also an amateur astronomer.

He is survived by his dear wife of 72 years, Mary Alice Wood Bernstein, his three children, Joseph N. Bernstein, Sr., Mineral Ridge, Ohio, Karen Smith and her husband Doug Brown, Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Melinda K. Bernstein, Silver Spring, Maryland, two grandchildren, Joseph N. Bernstein, Jr., Jennifer Bernstein, three great-grandchildren, and four sisters, Katherine Elman, Ann Lee Zercher, both of Chicago, Illinois, Margaret Shuler and Joan Taylor, both of Youngstown, Ohio.

Friends will be received Friday, June 28, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home, www.hillandkunselman.com., 3801 Fourth Ave., College Hill, Beaver Falls. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 8 p.m. with Pastor Lonnie Hogue, a member of VVA Chapter 862 officiating.  Private interment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.

The Rochester VFW will conduct a service in the funeral home at 6:15 p.m. on Friday.

The Vietnam Veterans, Chapter 862 will have a white rose’s ceremony at 7 p.m. The Vietnam Veterans Chapter 862 will conduct full military rites at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ed may be to VVA, Chapter 862., P.O. Box 26, Rochester, PA 15074.
