Mary Delach Obituary

Mary A. Delach joined hands with the angels as she completed her earthly journey and was led into the divine presence of our Blessed Lord and the company of His saints on Saturday, October 19. Mary had been a patient at the Caprice Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Lima, OH since suffering a fall in her home in July.

The extended family she leaves behind grieves her loss, but is consoled by the firm belief she is now serene in the heavenly light and is reunited with the love of her life, husband Stephen A. Delach, who passed from this life in 2014. She also joins with her beloved eight siblings, all of whom preceded her in death ,Michael (Kate) Capan, Lillian (Pete) Jurich, Nicholas (Ann) Capan, Catherine (George )Brozich, Lucy Caler, Joseph Capan, John (Diane) Capan and Ann (Harry ) Guy. She is survived by nieces Barbara (Joseph) Colin of East Palestine, OH and Kathleen (Fred) Antonio of New Brighton, PA and nephews Donald (Jo) Brozich of Beaver Falls, PA, Dr. Ron (Barb) Brozich of Beaver, PA, John (Kathi) Capan of Baltimore, MD and David (JoAnn) Capan of Mt. Lebanon, PA, along with numerous grand nieces and grand nephews. She was the daughter of Nick and Barbara Capan, who emigrated from what was then the Croatian region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to build a new life here in the US. Mary was born on September 13, 1923 in Reynoldsville, West Virginia. Soon afterwards the family moved  to Beaver Falls, Pa where they established solid roots. Mary graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1942, and she and Stephen were united in matrimony at Holy Trinity Church in Ambridge, PA in 1955. Stephen’s career as a government inspector  took him to several locations and Mary forged a special home in each of those locations- Niles, OH, Marion, OH and then finally Austintown, OH, where they lived these past few decades.

While she had no children of her own, she and Steve showered their many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews with much love and attention. Their generosity was profound. She and Steve were accomplished dancers and loved to participate in various musical and dance activities. Mary enjoyed traveling and reflected often upon their journey to Europe in 1979 to visit a grand nephew stationed in West Germany. That trip also included traveling to what was then Yugoslavia, to visit the ancestral homeland in the Croatian region. Mary was also an enthusiastic fan of Penn State athletics and she and Steve attended many games across the country to watch a grand nephew play football. Mary celebrated her Croatian-American heritage robustly, eagerly listening to polka and ethnic tunes on radio and TV regularly. She was a member of Saint Joseph Parish in Austintown and she and Steve were frequent visitors to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson, OH.

The family extends its deepest appreciation to the exceptionally caring staff at Caprice for making Mary’s last few months safe, comfortable and pain-free. In her short time there she touched many of the care givers with her special blend of charm, spunk and humor.
