Donald Shaffer

September 15, 1927 ~ February 12, 2022 (age 94)


            Donald William Shaffer, 94, formerly of College Hill was born on September 15, 1927 in Rochester, PA to the late Clair W. and Mabel I. (Householder) Shaffer and passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Cambridge Village where he resided.

           Don graduated from Rochester High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Tech Sergeant. He retired from Babcock and Wilcox Tubular Products in 1987 after 40 years as a Supervisor in the Laboratory.

           Don was a lifetime member of St. John Burry’s Church, formerly St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church, in New Sewickley Twp. He was a 70-year member of the Big Knob Grange where he had served on the Big Knob Fair Board for over 55 years and their Finance Committee. He was also a member of Beaver Pomona Grange and the Pennsylvania and National Granges’.

           He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Sella Jane (Cooper) Shaffer, whom he married on October 2, 1947; two brothers, Robert and Clair Shaffer and a brother-in-law, Merrill Pflug.

            Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Shirley Shaffer, West Mayfield and Jeffrey and Lori Shaffer, Chippewa Twp.; two granddaughters, Brittnee (Bo) Ruffner and Bridgette Shaffer; a great granddaughter, Blakelee Ruffner; a brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and JoAnn Shaffer, Rochester; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Hilda Pflug, Marion Twp. and Nancy and Paul Alexander, New Brighton and two sisters-in-law, Julia Shaffer, New Brighton and Cathleen Shaffer, Beaver.

           A private funeral service was held for his family. His pastor, Reverend John Fanella officiated. Interment followed in St. John Burry’s Cemetery in New Sewickley Twp.

           His family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Cambridge Village who fondly referred to Don as “Happy Pappy“ for their compassion and care.
