Martha Jane Breit, 96, died December 5, 2023 after a long and gallant struggle with cancer.
A lifelong resident of Beaver Falls, she grew up in Morado during the Great Depression, became a young war bride in 1944, and spent a lifetime as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. While Martha Jane was a quiet, private person, others were drawn by her sweet manner, her ready smile and compassion. She was always there for others, always welcoming to all. She often set an inviting table and enjoyed intimate evenings of cards or other activities with her husband, family and friends. She rose to the occasion during every crisis.
Born on May 24, 1927 in Beaver Falls, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Gladys Grocott. She was married for over 63 years to Martin E. Breit, a former police chief and postmaster of Beaver Falls. He preceded her in death in 2008. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Martin; her parents; and her brother Ronnie.
She is survived by her son, Michael, of Braintree, MA; her daughter, Michelle Byrd, of Chippewa Twp; three grandchildren: Marty and Sara Byrd, both local; and Stephen Breit, who resides with his wife, Brooke, in Ascutney, VT; and two great grandchildren, Callie and Evan Breit, also of Ascutney.
Martha Jane’s son was at her side at the time of her death. A private funeral was held at Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home, with Rev. Martin Galbreath, pastor of New Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, Freedom, officiating. She was laid to rest beside her husband at Grandview Cemetery, Big Beaver Borough.
